Breast Lifts Are Reaching New Heights

breasts-lift-article-2014Weight fluctuations and natural aging can cause the breasts to lose their youthful shape and firmness. Over time, our skin loses its elasticity and becomes stretched, and the breast tissues often begin to sag. This is especially noticeable in women who have had children. During pregnancy, the breasts swell, and they continue to be enlarged while breastfeeding. Once they return to their normal size, the breasts are often unable to adapt back to their original shape and are left with excess skin after being stretched for such a long period of time.

Many women are unhappy with the shape and position of their breasts, but increasing numbers of women are discovering that they can regain youthful, uplifted breasts with breast lift surgery. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), more than 90,000 breast lifts were performed in 2013, which is up 70 percent from 2000, which is twice the rate of the increase seen in breast augmentation procedures. This increase may be attributed to increased awareness of the procedure and the high-satisfaction rate of previous breast lift patients. Most women experience a boost in confidence and quality of life after the procedure.

Breast lift surgery can correct the following conditions:

  • Loose skin on the breasts
  • Sagging breasts
  • Poor breast shape
  • Loss of breast firmness
  • Nipples that point downward or hang below the breast crease
  • Enlarged areolas

During the procedure, excess breast skin and tissue are removed to improve the shape of the breasts and bring them to a higher position. If necessary, the nipples and areolas can be moved to a higher position on the breasts.

Breast lift surgery does not increase the volume of the breasts but actually slightly reduces them as tissue is removed. In fact, according to a study published in the July 2014 issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery®, the official medical journal of ASPS, women who undergo a breast lift often decrease the size of their breasts by one cup size. For this reason, many women choose to combine a breast lift with a breast augmentation to improve the shape and size of their breasts.
